Your most difficult experience getting a game to run

I was reading an article about a possible future Ultima game and it made me remember the time I was trying to get Ultima 8 to run in DOS back when it initially came out. I remember spending days configuring the autoexec.bat to get the right settings/free ram/audio/etc. just so that damn game could run. I couldn't even use that config to run other games so I had to keep it separate and reboot my computer just to play Ultima 8. Although I did feel a great sense of victory after I got it going.

So, I was wondering if anyone else had any experiences like that with a PC game?

Re: Your most difficult experience getting a game to run

many dos games were like this, you had to set the sound correctly on some using the setup file. not much has changed if you ask me. you install a new first person shooter and need to go through changing all the controls to how you like them, although it's not necessary it's still frustrating to do *shakes fist at sky

seting up dos games to work, and setting controls to first person shooters on pc are games in their own right. someone should develop a 'setting up a game game' where you score higher points for getting it right the first time and for fast setups.

I had this problem trying to get Theme Park to work. It took several attempts and probably a week on and off to get the autoexec.bat file right to be able to play the game rather than just see the intro and then see the game crash, damn that conventional memory. I remember my friend at the time was amazed that i had been able to change the autoexec file  .

The only other problems was the case of not enough ram in general, i had to double my 4 meg to 8 meg to be able to play Full Throttle which was worth it :D

That game would be as much fun as a Loading game where you score more points the longer you wait.

Seriously though, I don't have a specific game that comes to mind but it's probably a DOS game. I once took an old PC and attempted to dedicate it as a retro-gaming PC for old DOS/Windows games. I think I used it enough to play some Tomb Raider and Duke 3D, but the frustration of getting things to work correctly for a very small selection of games that I would play on the machine put me off from wanting to use it.

At least now we have virtual machines. ;)
Currently playing TES III: Morrowind. That's right. Screw you, Skyrim!

I was actually thinking of buying an old computer, since I see tons of them on Ebay for cheap, and using it as a gaming machine for DOS games. I'm sure it would be torture to get to run, but it would be nice to play Tie Fighter again.

I recall jumping through hoops to get The 11th Hour working right. I'm lazy for any of that now, connecting the nunchuck to play Skyward Sword seems like too much work.

I can remember lots of trouble with getting stuff to run. Being spoiled now with consoles and all, I don't think I bother with tedious installation procedures now-a-days. Only thing worse were those aweful C64 tape loading nightmares. :o

Primal Rage, PC, 486 Dx 100

I was just starting to learn about PC hardware. It ran OK on my 486 DX 66, but it ran like crap after upgrading to a DX 100. I messed with it for a few weeks (this is pre-google, so no easy answers :P ), and even took it to the shop I bought the upgrade from. Still nothing. Finally I noticed the turbo switch was disconnected.... That was it. To this day I'm still a little ticked off at the shop for not catching my (obvious and silly) mistake, but then again they're out of business anyway (yeah, go figure).
