Finding Time for Retro Gaming

Hello everyone. I'm not sure if this question was asked or discussed on the podcast before or not (I didn't find it on the search and haven't made it through all the back episodes). As I often get the "we want you back on the forum email" here, it got me thinking.

How do you all find time for retro gaming? I'm sure everyone has busy lives and it always seems that something else is pulling at you that takes priority away from sitting down for a gaming session.

I for example work full time, take classes for a master's at night, and recently had my first baby on Monday. At least I get to listen to the podcast to get my fix!

If nothing else, it might spur some interesting conversations.

Re: Finding Time for Retro Gaming

I have turned it into a profitable hobby so it is easier to justify spending additional time on it. Work a job you love and you will never work another day in your life type of thing.

I run a sheet metal shop 40 to 50 hours a week, help run Video Game Cowboys with Nick (of TRL) and am starting up Retro Gaming Magazine (again with Nick of TRL, see a trend yet?). On top of that, we manage a staff of about 12 people and I run Scenic 7 PR which represents about 12 clients right now.

I have a very understanding woman in my life who does what she can to help like answer phones while I am at work, catches e-mails and such.

Re: Finding Time for Retro Gaming

I do almost all my gaming after the kids go to bed. I alternate between semi-modern (PS2, PSP, Wii) and retro games every few weeks. Like right now I started Skyward Sword and after I finish that (which will be a while) I'll take up a retro RPG or something. The evening is also when I work on articles for my web site and those are almost always about retro games so I'll go back and play whatever I'm writing about then. Since my wife does a lot of writing in the evenings too I end up either gaming or working ~4-6 days a week. It's always limited to 1-2 hour sessions but it adds up quickly.

Wow, that was my life in 2003 (except I had a baby girl). Get to the office at 6:30, leave the office at 3:30, start classes at 5:00, maybe get home at 10:00, alternate between homework and baby on the weekends. I feel your pain.

Get a protable console

and steal a bit of time each day. Most of the newer ones have a good selections of compilations on them, and you can always play Gameboy, Gamegear, Lynx and if you can find it TurboExpress.

Re: Finding Time for Retro Gaming

This is my biggest problem. Since I follow all the new releases on PS3 and 360, most of my gaming time goes to those systems. There's so many quality games coming out every month that sometimes it's hard to find time to go back to the SNES or Genesis stuff.

Re: Finding Time for Retro Gaming

i still think it's to do with motivation to play retro games which are generally frustratingly difficult (compared to modern games) at the best of times, at least 16bit and prior. you have to memorise most retro games to advance, modern games not so much, especially something like an online fps. though there are exceptions like tetris.
