Best worst game.

Anyone got an awful game they like anyway? I'll cast my vote for Cyborg Justice on the Sega Genesis. It's repetitive as hell, the hit detection is it's own brand of crazy and you can beat the whole game by moving up, then down, then doing a throw. But it's got Cyborgs and Justice. Plus it's really got that Arcade feel. Jewel Master is the same too. True Arcade quality, too bad it has all the qualities of a terrible arcade game.

No coping out with stuff like Trio the Punch. It's cheating if the game is trying to be bad. For the record, I liked E.T., and Shaq Fu isn't nearly as bad as everyone says. Now if you want an absolute train wreck of a game, I can't recommend Criticom for the Sega Saturn highly enough. No joke, there was a guy on Amazon selling sealed a copy for the low, low price of $699, but sadly it's gone. No doubt snapped up by some enterprising game collector.

Re: Best worst game.

I recall that Rob made this his Lame of the Week and I wanted to defend it then but... no time like the present! I dug up this artical I wrote some time ago and it is my defence for Deadly Towers.

A Long story: Deadly Towers I adore thee!

I think that Deadly Towers has a bad rap more for it being "cool" to say it sucks than any legitimate grievance against it. Most of the people that offer any form of analyse demonstrate that they haven't played the game for more than 5 minutes. So, let me tell you why I think DT is a great game shall I?

First, of the thing it gets criticised most for is Prince Myer and his swords plodding movement rate and the seeming randomness of the dungeons. Those happen to be excellent points for me to tell you why they are what makes the game GREAT in fact!

In the beginning, you will be hesitant to throw out your sword as this will leave you quite vulnerable. Well, what do you expect -- the Prince is but level 1!? As you progress through the game, the power gains you make are truly something to marvel and give some of the best impressions of character growth seen in a game --and certainly true of games in 1986! From the sluggish movement and feeble sword-works, Prince Myer will, in time, move with swift precision and attack with ruthless efficiency aided in part by many pieces of equipment and weapons, some legendary in nature and devious in their placement.

Which leads to the other area of great satisfaction; the exploration leading to the discovery of said mystic items. I dare one to try and hide the wide eyes they will be unable to suppress upon being whisked into a "parallel zone" and seeing for the first time the splendor that is SPLENDOR! Or the heartening and relief of stumbling, bloody and near death into a Shop deep in the dungeon during your most desperate hour! Or perhaps you'll enjoy the chill of excitement if you should fall off the edge of a walkway and instead of plunging to your demise, find yourself suspended upon an invisible bridge!

Lets not mention the horrors you will face upon climbing the dreaded towers. You will most likely cower in fear as you are faced with huge, very angry guardians. Will you be strong enough to prevail or will your name be lost among the countless who have strove for glory and instead found only the bitterness and despair of failure and death?

As you can see, I am quite a fan of the game. See, when I got this way back then, games weren't disposable as they seem to be today. Even if it had sucked, I'd have played on because I had little choice. Fortunately for me that I did adventure on; for it has left me with the lasting memories of having accomplished something great. My reward for enduring it's trial was an ending that made all I'd gone through that much sweeter!

What's sad is that so many of the people who like to go on about how much DT sucks are people that probably played the rom for 5 minutes, found it too hard and 'slow' and felt justified in parroting that it sucks. To them, a great game has been forever lost.

Yet hark! Though it may be of a time long past, I shall honor it and let it lie with the dignity it so dearly deserves.

R.I.P. My dear Deadly Towers
Prince Turbo Myer, ye Great, Great, Great Nephew

I'm shamefull to say that Last Battle for The Megadrive/Genesis is my guilty pleasure. It looks like crap, plays like crap, and I paid a whooping 120 dutch guilders for it (about a 100 euro's, including inflation). Still I bit my teeth into it, and invested many hours into it. I remember it was tough a hell. And no continues whatsoever. I managed to get pretty far, but never finished it of course.

Altogether I never had the frustration levels which wanted me to throw the controller through the screen.

Re: Best worst game.

i could name a few

wwf for nes
knuckle bash 2 for arcade
sidewinder for nes
pinbot for nes
highspeed for nes
ice climber for nes
mach rider for nes

i don't consider them bad myself. i consider them to be average games that are enjoyable in short bursts. many would consider them as bad games and turn them off. i guess you could consider this list as scraping the bottom of the 'gems' barrel.

it is a difficult question to answer, almost impossible. if you consider a game as bad you usualy won't enjoy it or want to play it at all. so i would consider these as average which can be enjoyed from time to time.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

an average game i would not play from time to time or at all is:

tmnt for nes

this is an average game that was enjoyable to play through a couple of times but not something i would go back to because it's frustrating to play

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

and lastly a bad game i did not enjoy and won't go back to is:

et for atari 2600

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

i think the question should be:

what game do most people consider bad that you enjoy playing

It Came from the Desert for TG16CD is number one on my list. I think 99% of people will who try it will either hate the video sequences or be too freaked out by them to keep watching. The control on the action sequences is terrible, almost unplayable at times. It's hard to say many positive things about it but still I enjoy it. I think because it's so incredibly weird and unlike any other game I've played.

Re: Best worst game.

Two Games: Castlequest for the NES and Comix Zone for the Genesis. Castlequest because they give you the freaking map and even highlight the proper route to get to the princess hidden in the vast castle. Plus you have 40+ lives to spend getting there, but with the never-ending loop of music I wouldn't blame you for just making your little knight dive into a pit of spikes over and over again! Comix Zone because I love the gameplay and comic-book style levels, but I hate only having one life! It's either not having the right items to fight off the baddies or missing that large jump by an inch...oh well! :flush:
Currently playing: Fatal Labyrinth (PS3), King's Quest: The Silver Lining (PC)
